GARMENT CARE GUIDE
Countless hours of meticulous work and generations of craftsmanship have gone into creating your bespoke garments from Taryor Gabriels, and we want to ensure you enjoy them to the fullest. A well-cared-for bespoke piece can last for many years, even generations, but this requires mindful care from its owner. Unlike fast fashion, a bespoke garment embodies the artistry and dedication of skilled hands. Think of it as commissioning a unique masterpiece. Below, we provide some practical suggestions to help you maintain the longevity and pristine condition of your garments. In short, nurture your garment, and it will reward you with years of elegance.
DURING WEAR
01. Travel Light
In today’s world, stuffed pockets are one of the greatest threats to your suit. While it may be tempting to fill your jacket and trouser pockets with phones, keys, and daily necessities, overloading them is a quick way to distort their shape.
Before hanging up your garment, make sure to empty your pockets completely. Neglecting this can affect the structure and line of your suit, and cause premature wear to the lining.
02. Rotate Frequently
Our tailors suggest wearing a suit once or twice a week and rotating your wardrobe regularly. This practice significantly extends the lifespan of each suit.
Consider purchasing an additional pair of trousers with each suit to double its durability, as trousers tend to show signs of wear faster due to friction.
At the End of the Day
03. Hang It Properly
Always hang your jacket, trousers, or coat on a well-shaped wooden hanger with thick, rounded shoulders as soon as you remove them. While it may be tempting to drape your jacket over a chair or hang it on a hook, this can easily ruin the suit’s well-pressed structure.
Before putting your garment back in the closet, take a moment to check for lint, hair, or debris, and use a clothes brush or lint roller to freshen it up.
Quick Tip
Let your garment air in a well-ventilated space to allow any odors to naturally dissipate. Most superficial smells will vanish this way, keeping your wardrobe fresh.
04. Store It in a Garment Bag
If you plan to store your garment for an extended period, use a garment bag and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. In dressing rooms with natural light, store clothes behind closet doors or in garment bags.
For added protection against moths, opt for natural alternatives like lavender or cedarwood balls. These offer a pleasant fragrance, unlike the chemical scent of mothballs.
In Transit
05. Fold with Care
When packing a suit for travel, the key is to create as few folds as possible. Ideally, use a suit carrier. After a long journey, allow your suit to rest by removing it from its case immediately.
If folding is necessary, lay the jacket face-up on a flat surface, fold the shoulders inward, and fold the jacket once from the shoulders down to create minimal creases.
Quick Tip
For any alterations or repairs, trust professionals. Mishandling during pressing can ruin your jacket. Always ensure pressing is done by experts to preserve your suit’s structure.
06. Use Steam Wisely
If your suit looks a bit tired after traveling and you can’t access professional services, hang it in a steamy bathroom. The moisture will help eliminate minor wrinkles. For more persistent creases, a portable steamer can be useful, but be cautious. Overuse of intense steam on jackets and coats can damage the fabric’s structure.
Long term care
07. Clean with Care
We recommend dry-cleaning your bespoke garments no more than once a year. To freshen them up between cleanings, opt for a sponge and press treatment. Overcleaning can degrade the fabric’s fibers over time.
Find a reputable dry cleaner with experience handling bespoke garments. If you’re cleaning a suit, make sure the entire suit—including any extra trousers—is cleaned together to avoid uneven wear.
Quick Tip
When ironing shirts, avoid steaming the collar or cuffs. Instead, use direct heat. For the best result, press the collar face-down to prevent wrinkling.
08. Mind the Pressing
Pressing your garment requires care and attention. A standard dry cleaner may press a suit on a flat industrial machine, which can flatten the structure and even damage buttons. Contact Taryor Gabriels, and we can recommend a professional pressing service to maintain your garment’s integrity.
Alterations & Repairs
09. Trust the Experts
Don’t discard your bespoke garment at the first sign of damage. We can repair most accidents, from minor tears to loose threads. Bring your garment in for our complimentary inspection service, where our tailors can advise on necessary repairs and alterations.
Bespoke garments are designed with extra seam inlays, allowing them to be adjusted as your body changes over time. Even if your suit no longer fits perfectly, we can make the necessary adjustments. Our tailors apply the same expertise to alterations as they do when crafting your original suit.
